A combine harvester is very useful farm machinery for harvesting, winnowing, and threshing rice, corn, wheat, sunflower, pulses, and other crops in the field. Harvesting crops in one operational process can save time as well as human labour cost, and bringing down the work costs. Additionally, these machines can increase agricultural productivity as the harvesting is carried out more efficiently, making farming more profitable. How does it work? The key feature of a combine harvester is the detachable header platform that has shears to cut crops and a revolving cylinder to gather the cut crops into the auger. The header platform can be of a standard or specialized. Various header platforms are used to harvest various types of crops often. Uses of Combine Harvesters in India Small combine harvesters are suitable for the Indian agricultural conditions, where farm sizes are somewhat small and landscape types can differ considerably. Combine harvesters price can be approximately twenty lakhs or more, and this makes taking them out of the reach of many small farmers. The Indian government presently offers subsidies of up to forty percent of the purchase price to encourage farmers to purchase harvester in India. Even with such available subsidies though, these farm machines may still be too expensive for many farmers with comparatively small land-holdings. It may make more sense for farmers in India that are unable to buy farm machines, to hire combine harvesters from agents when they need them. Usually, farmers need the combine harvesters during the harvest season, and so if they hire them for a short period, they don’t have to bear the maintenance costs of the machines. Farmers often pull small tractors on top of combine harvesters in India with cranes to use and drive the harvesters to increase efficiency. In India combine harvester sale is still small when compared to tractor sales. This means that unlike tractors, where farmers shop around for many types of models for different purposes, only a limited number of models of combine harvester are available, and most of these are quite expensive to buy for many farmers in India. Also, if we talk about these in terms of advertising, they do not yet receive that much publicity that tractors get in India. Combine harvester manufacturers in India have been expanding into other agricultural machines, also exporting their products to different other countries.
