No-till farming is a method where seeds and fertilizer are sown into the soil without tilling or ploughing it. In this process farm machinery like zero tillage or no till seed-drill is used to place the seeds directly under the upper layer of the soil by digging a hole at leveled spaces and without creating much disturbance to the current structure of the soil. The use of zero till drill has several significant advantages in farming, and a few we have mentioned below. Stops Soil Erosion - The soil naturally is vulnerable to erosion, caused by wind and water. The use of a Zero tillage planter in no till farming makes it resistant to erosion. This also helps when lots of mulch such as stalks, straw, pods, leaves, chaff cover needs to be maintained on the upper layer of the soil to reduce erosion. Lesser Soil Compaction – The tilled soil becomes smoother in structure than the no-tilled soil. Ploughing modifies the natural state of the soil entirely making it weak to carry heavy loads, such as the wheel traffic in tillage. It also makes the soil typically more vulnerable to compaction. Some farmers believe that soil tillage is necessary for water infiltration and root growth. However, in case of heavy rains, tilled soil comes back in original form and it needs to be tilled again. This way tilling again leads to more tillage, making the soil structure worse. Saves Time for farming Activities- If a farmer choose to sow seeds using zero till drills, it needs only single rounds. Thus saving a lot time using no till seed drills or zero tillage planters in comparison to regular ploughing practices. Seed drills are only requires to run throungh the field just one time which also saves the labor costs for planting seeds. Easy and fast seed sowing process with zero tillage planters gets crops planted before the soil dries too much. Lesser Fuel Costs - Fewer rounds of tractor across the field using a zero tillage planter dramatically reduces fuel costs for a farmer. Saves Moisture in the Soil - No till or zero tillage seeding lets the plant residues on the soil surface, help keeping the soil moist and protected against evaporation caused by wind or scorching sun. Makes Nutrient Rich Soil – In the no tilled soil, the plant residues is left to the surface to decompose naturally which helps in increasing the productivity of the soil. It makes soil nutrient rich and healthier restricting the outbreaks of harmful insects. With the use of zero tillage planters the organic matter into the soil increases making it more productive.
