A mechanized manipulation of the soil to provide favourable condition for crop growth is known as Tilling or ploughing. Soil tillage or ploughing consists of several steps such as, breaking the compact surface to a certain depth and loosen the soil mass to enable the crop crops to penetrate and spread into the soil. Ploughing is performed as a primary operation in farming to cut, break and invert the soil partially or completely in the process of making a seedbed. Ploughing essentially is done to open the hard upper layer of the soil and break the clods to make it suitable for sowing seeds. Mould-board Plough– A Mould board plough consists of mainly share, a mould board, land side, frog and tail piece. A share is a sharp, well-polished and pointed part that pierces through the soil to make a horizontal cut under the surface. The shares are made of special wear-resistant steel blades. The mould-board lifts, turns and breaks the furrow slice after receiving it from the share. A mould-board plough comes in different designs and shapes to suit different types of soil conditions and crop requirements. The mouldboard is generally used to cope with trashy conditions. Disc Plough – A disc plough cuts, turns and breaks soil by separately mounted large steel discs. A disc plough is designed in such a way that it reduces friction. It uses rolling discs instead of sliding plough bottom. A disc plough is suitable for the conditions where a mould-board plough does not work perfectly. Advantages of disc plough
